Rape suspect killed in Cox’s Bazar 'gunfight'
A rape suspect was killed in a reported gunfight between his associates and members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Napitkhali area of Cox’s Bazar early Wednesday. The deceased, Anwarul Islam, 52, son of late Ershad Ali of Badarkhali village, was accused of raping a schoolgirl of the same village on February 11, said a RAB 7 press release. Tipped off, a team of RAB7 conducted a drive in the village to arrest Anwarul, according to the press release. Sensing the presence of the elite force members, the associates of Anwarul opened fire at RAB members, prompting them to retaliate and thus triggering a gunfight. Anwarul was caught, while the others managed to flee the scene. Later, the elite force members took bullet-wounded Anwarul to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty doctors declared him dead. A firearm and ammunition were also recovered from the scene.
