Four electronic media journalists came under assault by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists while discharging their duties on the Chittagong University campus on Tuesday afternoon.
The injured journalists are Somoy TV reporter Partha Pratim Biswas and cameraman Atique, and Jamuna TV reporter Arifur Rahman Sabuj and cameraman Md Nasir.
Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Partha said: “Chhatra League activists loyal to the organization’s former CU unit president Alamgir Tipu launched the attack. They also vandalized a vehicle of Somoy TV.”
Sabuj said: “For the second time I was assaulted in front of the CU proctor’s office. The first attack took place on December 24, 2006 when I was a first-year student of the university. That attack was carried out by Shibir men and the second one by Chhatra League men.”
Meanwhile, condemning Tuesday’s assault on the journalists, Chittagong Union of Journalists Secretary Hassan Ferdous said: “We talked to the university authorities and the city mayor, AJM Nasir Uddin, to take actions against those involved.”
Earlier in the day, a Chhatra League faction, known to be followers of the mayor, enforced an indefinite strike, demanding the removal of CU Proctor Ali Asgar Chowdhury and protesting searches by police in two dormitories.
The protestors also padlocked the university’s main entrance.
As police charged batons to disperse the Chhata League men, they went on a rampage on the campus, and vandalized the proctor office and some vehicles including the one of Somoy TV.
