BNP-police clash injures 50 in Habiganj
At least 50 people have been injured in Habiganj when activists of the BNP clashed with police for obstructing their procession. Sources say at least 20 of the injured, including an on-duty journalist, were hit by bullets. The BNP has accused police of opening fire on their peaceful protest and claimed that more than 100 activists have been injured. The situation is still tense in the town after clashes. Tension flared after police prevented the BNP’s district unit from taking out a procession from their party office on Tuesday morning. It was part of the party’s countrywide program protesting against the conviction of BNP chief Khaleda Zia in a corruption case earlier this month. Police and BNP activists fought pitched battles after the law enforcers charged batons. Police later fired from their shotguns, leaving at least 20 people injured. Habiganj BNP unit chief GK Gaus claimed that tension escalated after the Detective Branch OC Shah Alam threatened to kill him in crossfire. However, the district’s Additional Police Superintendent Hayatun Nabi claimed that they had intervened after the BNP activists created unrest. He said police “fired shotgun rounds, rubber bullets and lobbed teargas shells in self-defense and brought the situation under control.” Gaus was initially detained after the clash broke out but was later released. Those hit by bullets include Bijoy TV’s district correspondent Ilias Ali Mashuk, Jubo Dal’s Habiganj unit General Secretary Mia Mohammad Ilias, Chhatra Dal’s Senior Vice-president Zillur Rahman, Sadar thana unit Jubo Dal unit Vice-president Oliur Rahman, Chhatra Dal leaders Zibul Ahmed, Abul Bashar Isa, Abdul Mannan, Badsha Siddique.
