A man has been arrested in Godagari upazila, Rajshahi for allegedly raping a girl with disabilities, police sources said.
Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Godagari Model police station OC (investigation) Altaf Hossain said the accused, Amzad Ali, was arrested and produced before a court on Thursday.
The OC further said police were able to take steps to quickly track and bring in the suspect because of the National Help Desk service, 999.
A case was filed against the accused under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Godagari police station, he confirmed.
According to the case, on Tuesday, Amzad, 65, native of Bauspur village, was in Boyarmari village in the same upazila, where he lured a girl with disabilities out to an open field around 4pm, promising to give her grass, and forced himself on her.
As the girl screamed, her elder sister rushed to her, and Amzad fled the scene.
The girl told her sister about what Amzad did to her.
“When we heard about the incident, we called the National Help Desk at 999,” said Sanaullah, chairman of Char Ashariadaha union, where Boyarmari village is located. “The help desk promptly informed Godagari Model police station. Later, the girl and her family went to the police station and filed a case.”
