Unknown miscreants have vandalized a newly built Shaheed Minar at a school at Banshdaha Union in Satkhira’s Sadar upazila.
Residents of the area have accused local Jubo League leader Khorshed Alam Ripon of being involved in the incident that took place on Sunday night at Hawalkhali Government Primary School.
But Ripon, who is also a former BNP leader, has brushed off the allegations against him. He had reportedly opposed the Shaheed Minar’s construction in the school premises.
The school’s headmaster, Md Shafiul Islam, said local philanthropist Md Alauddin had recently collected Tk10,000 from locals and had the Shaheed Minar built to commemorate the International Mother Language Day on February 21.
But the memorial was found in ruins on Monday morning, he said.
School management committee President and Banshdaha Union Parishad Member Shahidul Islam said Jubo League leader Khorshed had opposed the initiative and he also had an altercation with Alauddin over building the Shaheed Minar.
“We have already informed the upazila education officer about the incident. Legal measures will also follow,” Shahidul said.
However, Khorshed denied any involvement in the vandalism, saying: “I have been sick for several days and staying at home. I do not know who destroyed the monument.”
