Chittagong city BNP chief detained after clash
BNP's Chittagong city unit President Shahadat Hossain and several other activists have been detained after a skirmish with police. Supporters of the BNP fought a running battle with police in front of the party's office in Kazir Deuri on Thursday morning. Shahadat, while being taken away by police, told the media: “The Awami League has crossed all limits.” Witnesses said BNP activists had launched an unprovoked attack on police by pelting stones at them. Police charged batons to disperse the attackers and took control of the situation. The area was deserted after the clash. Additional police personnel was deployed in Kazir Deuri since Thursday morning. Law enforcers also restricted access to the office, practically isolating it from other BNP leaders and activists. Before the skirmish, police arrested eight BNP activists, including five women, from in front of the office. Chittagong Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner SM Mostain Hossain said: “BNP activists pelted stones at us. So, we had to disperse them and detain Shahadat from the office.”
