The ringleader of notorious Julhas Bahini has been killed in a "gunfight" with police in Aminpur Thana's Dhalarchor area in Pabna.
The deceased, identified as Julhas Mondol, 42, was wanted in at least nine cases, including extortion, robbery, possession of illegal firearms and kidnappings, filed with Aminpur, Rajbari and Kushtia police stations.
Pabna Police Super Jihadul Kabir PPM said Julhas was arrested from Dhaka on Tuesday and then handed over to Pabna's Aminpur police station the same day.
He said: “After intense interrogation, Julhas gave us important information about his associates and illegal firearms. Based on his information, Aminpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sukumar Mohonto led a police operation in Dhalarchor area Tuesday night”
“When the police were in Dhalarchor, Julhas' associates tried to snatch him away from police custody, triggering a gunfight.
“During the gunfight, Julhas managed to escape from our custody. After 30 minutes of exchanging fire, members of the gang retreated, leaving an injured Julhas. He was rushed to Pabna’s Bera hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead,” Police Super Jihadul added.
He also said that four police officers were injured in the “gunfight.”
Police recovered two pipe guns, a pistol, two machetes, seven rounds of bullets, one pistol round, one bullet slug and a dagger from the spot.
Julhas Mondol's body has been kept in Pabna General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Police filed a case against 10 to 12 unidentified individuals in this connection.
