Around 200 passengers on a Comilla-bound Demu train escaped a horrific tragedy due to alertness displayed by the train driver.
According to the passengers, the train travelling from Noakhali to Comilla on January 27 made a stop at Comilla's Laksham Saturday afternoon.
“Assuming the line to be clear, the driver started the engine. When the train reached near line 21-B, train driver Kamal Hossain saw a part of the rail line's trap was missing. He then immediately stopped the train and drove it back to the platform,” a passenger said.
“We were getting anxious and worried. At one stage, we got into an argument with train station officials for the wrong signal,” another passenger added.
Train driver Kamal Hossain blamed the station master for giving the wrong signal, saying that a freight train had also been derailed owing to wrong signaling the previous day.
“The train was only a few feet away from the railway trap. If I did not stop the train at the right time, it would have fallen into a pond, resulting in many deaths,” he said.
Station master of Laksam Railway Station Jalal Uddin admitted that mistakes were made, but blamed the cabin crew for giving the wrong signal.
“The driver of the Demu train confused the signal intended for a Karnaphuli train and started his train,” he said.
