The ringleader of a notorious inter-district robbery gang in Chuadanga district's Jibonnagar has been killed in a “gunfight” with police in Uthli Union's Santoshpur - Andulbaria road in Chuadanga.
The deceased, identified as Iman Ali, 35, was wanted in several cases, including extortion, robbery, possession of illegal firearms and bombings.
Receiving information that members of the notorious gang had gathered preparation of a robbery at a mango garden in Jibonnagar's Santoshpur, police conducted an operation in the area around 2am on Tuesday, said Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Chuadanga police Ahsan Habib.
Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the gang hurled a few cocktail bombs, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, he said.
After 20 minutes of exchanging fire, members of the gang retreated. Later, police found injured Iman Ali in the area.
He was rushed to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Police recovered a pipe gun, two rounds of cartridge, four cocktails and five machetes from the spot.
Iman's body has been kept in Chuadanga Sadar Hospital morgue and will be handed over to his family on Wednesday after an autopsy.
