Cantonment College lab assistant detained with bomb making materials
Jessore’s Detective Branch of Police (DB) arrested a Cantonment College lab assistant in possession of bomb making materials at the district’s Three Road Junction on Airport Road on Tuesday. The detainee was identified as 37-year-old Jahurul Islam Rony, son of the late Altaf Hossain of Jhenaidah’s Sharabariya area under Kaliganj upazila, according to Jessore DB Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moniruzzaman. Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon, the OC said Jessore DB Sub-Inspector Mohammad Jamil Ahammad arrested Jahurul from a bus stand at the junction at around 9pm on Tuesday. A total 1kg of explosive material, comprising 500 grams each of white and yellow powder, were confiscated from the lab assistant. The side bag in which he was carrying the powder and the motorcycle he had with him were also confiscated. The motorcycle had Jhenaidah plates. “Jahurul had long been supplying explosive material to militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) under the instruction of JMB member Abdullah,” the OC said. Jahurul Islam told reporters that he met JMB members Abdullah and Hasan when praying at the old hostel mosque of Jessore’s MM College. He had twice supplied them with chemicals such as sodium, potassium and carbonate. Jahurul added that he bought the chemicals from Halim Scientific in the City College area of Jessore. A case has been filed with Jessore Kotwali police station regarding the incident.
