Detectives have arrested two leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League's Belkuchi upazila unit in a case for harassing the municipality's Mayor Asha Noor Biswar during an attack last December.
Sirajganj Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Rawshon Ali said they arrested Sazzadul Haque Reza, general secretary of the upazila unit Chhatra League, and SM Omar Faruq, joint general secretary of the unit, from in front of the upazila Awami League headquarters around 5pm on Thursday.
The two leaders were arrested in a case filed by Mayor Asha Noor Bishwar under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act. The complainant named a total 15 accused in the case.
According to the case statement, some miscreants led by Sazzad broke into the conference room of the municipality during a meeting chaired by the mayor.
The miscreants then threatened the mayor with firearms and demanded money from her. As the mayor declined, the hoodlums harassed her, according to the complaint.
Meanwhile, supporters of the two Chhatra League leaders staged fierce protests after their arrest. The protesters blocked several roads near the upazila Awami League headquarters and torched 20-22 auto-rickshaws and a bus.
Additional police forces have been deployed to the area to bring the situation under control.
