Sudipta Chowdhury Emu was the apple of her parents’ eyes. The 19-year-old was a meritorious student who was preparing to appear in 2018 HSC examinations from Dhaka Cambrian School and College. She was also a cadet of Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC).
Like many other young girls, Sudipta had set the sky as her limit, but her life came to a premature end in a gruesome murder instead, reportedly in the hands of a local womanizer named Jackie on December 26, 2017.
Sudipta’s parents Sanjib Chowdhury Jhulon and Gopi Chowdhury live in the Boro Bazar area in Cox’s Bazar town. When this correspondent met with them to speak about Sudipta's death, both of them vehemently claimed Jackie had killed their daughter.
“Jackie murdered my daughter and tried to disguise the heinous act as a road accident, with the help of a local influential quarter,” Sudipta's father Sanjib said with tears in his eyes.
He demanded exemplary punishment for the killer. "Let Jackie's punishment be a warning for culprits like him who plague the society."
Sanjib said Sudipta was visiting home during her college vacation. Jackie, a local, used to sexually harass her and frequently propositioned her.
“When my daughter went to visit her friend in the Baharchhara area on December 26, Jackie abducted her and murdered her.”
Sudipta's father broke down in tears while describing that day’s event when he saw her daughter alive for the last time.
“Sudipta was able to make one last call to her mother before she was killed. My daughter said she was being taken away by someone, and that she might not live to see another day,” he said.
“I was worried about my daughter when she did not contact us for hours, so I called her again. I was able to reach her one final time. Her voice was cracking with fear, but the call disconnected before she could talk to me. I could not reach her again.”
Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Sudipta’s cousin Debsmita Chowdhury said: “She had a birthday celebration on August 5, 2017. Jackie showed up there, but he was told to leave by her friends. Jackie has been holding a grudge against her since then.”
According to police sources, Sudipta died under mysterious circumstances in the Mermaid Beach Resort area near the Marine Drive in Cox’s Bazar. Her father Sanjib filed a murder case with Ramu police station on December 27, naming Jackie as the sole accused.
A Cox's Bazar court placed Jackie on a two-day remand. Ramu police station OC SM Mizanur Rahman, who is the investigation officer of the case, stated that the suspect had given important information regarding the incident, which could not be made public yet as the investigation is still in progress.
“We prepared an autopsy report after Sudipta's body was recovered. The victim had wounds on the back, left and right sides of her head. There was an injury on the left side of her nose, and her clothes were bloodied,” the OC said. “Traces of semen were found in the victim's genitals, and both her knees were wounded.”
Terming the incident tragic, Ramu police station acting OC AKM Liakat Ali said: “The case's investigation is progressing significantly. The sole suspect has been arrested and sent to jail.
“During remand, Jackie gave us some important information during interrogation, which will be crucial in solving the case.”
He assured that the charge sheet regarding this case would be submitted as soon as possible.
