ACC sues JaPa lawmaker, 4 others in BASIC Bank loan scam

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed two cases against Jatiya Party (JaPa) lawmaker Mahjabeen Morshed, her husband Morshed Murad Ibrahim and three others for allegedly misappropriating Tk275 crore from BASIC Bank Ltd in a loan scam. Sirazul Huq, assistant director of the ACC, filed the two cases with Double Mooring police station on Wednesday in Chittagong city under Sections 409 and 420 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947. Mahjabeen is a reserved seat MP from Chittagong and president of JaPa's Chittagong city unit, while Morshed is the vice-chairman of JaPa and former president of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Mahjabeen is accused of misappropriating Tk141 crore from the BASIC Bank, while her husband is accused of embezzling Tk134 crore.
