The father of a student at Thuruliya KG and Pre-cadet School in Cox’s Bazar was allegedly beaten by teachers for protesting corruption on the campus and partiality in exam results on Sunday.
The victim was identified as Ayat Ullah, the father of class II student Shahriar Nafis.
Cox's Bazar police OC Ranjit Kumar confirmed that Hayat filed a case accusing Thuruliya High School Headmaster Jahirul Haque and six others regarding the incident on Monday evening.
Ayat claimed Borhan Uddin, the school headmaster, became enraged with him when he asked why Shahriar had received lower numbers in recent examinations.
“The headmaster, along Jahirul Haque, the headmaster of neighboring Thuruliya High School, and some others physically assaulted me. They tortured me after tying my hands with rope and threw me on the ground,” he said.
A video of the incident has since gone viral on the social media.
Ayat also alleged that both the headmasters were associated with Jamaat-Shibir and they had previously threatened him.
“Both the headmasters, Borhan Uddin and Jahirul Haque, are associated with Jamaat-Shibir. I have been protesting their illegal political meetings inside the schools. They had previously threatened to kill me,” Ayat said.
However, both the headmasters have denied the allegations.
According to Borhan Uddin, Ayat had grabbed him by the collar on the day of the incident as the father was angered by his son’s poor scores.
“Thuruliya High School Headmaster Jahirul Haque and some other teachers came to save me after seeing his (Ayat’s) violent behavior. Some students also tried to stop him,” he said.
Meanwhile, Jahirul Haque said: “He (Ayat) punched me in the nose and I bled. We did not attack Ayat Ullah.”
“We are not associated with Jamaat-Shibir. This is a conspiracy against us,” he added.
Cox’s Bazar sadar UNO Md Noman Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune that he had already visited the site of the scuffle and spoken to Ayat.
We will take necessary legal steps after investigating the incident,” he said.
