11 including 3 RU teachers injured in clash over cricket match
At least eleven people, including three teachers, have been injured during a clash between the students of two departments following a cricket match at Rajshahi University (RU). The incident took place at the university field following a cricket match held between the Department of Finance and Department of Geography and Environmental Science on Sunday. According to eyewitnesses, students from the two departments began jeering each other as soon as the geography team beat the finance team in the semi-final match of the inter-department cricket tournament. Several students from the finance department, including the RU Chhatra League unit Vice-President Rifat, attacked the victorious team, drawing students from both departments present into the scuffle. The teachers were injured when they tried to stop the fighting. The injured teachers are Md Mizanur Rahman, Md Abdullah Al Maruf, and Zihad Ahmed, who hold the positions of associate professor, assistant professor and lecturer from the Department of Geography and Environmental Science respectively. Later, the members of university’s proctorial team calmed down the agitated students. The injured students from the Department of Geography confirmed the skirmish and pointed out Rifat for his role in the attack. Five geography students and three finance students were also injured during the clash. RU Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman said: “We have heard about the incident. Measures will be taken later after discussion.”
