Bakshiganj municipality election results announcement postponed

Update : 29 Dec 2017, 02:19 PM
The announcement of the results for municipality elections in Bakshiganj of Jamalpur district of Mymensingh have been postponed after a polling at a centre was suspended. The presiding officer suspended the collection of votes at Malirchar Hajipara Government Primary School centre in Jamalpur’s Bakshiganj municipality on Thursday, following accusations of hijacking of ballot papers and forcefully stamping on them. Manjurul Alam, returning officer of the Bakshiganj municipality election, said mayoral candidate Nazrul Islam Saudagar, contesting with jug symbol, received 8,599 votes at 11 among the 12 centres. Nazrul’s nearest mayoral rival and BNP candidate Fakruzzaman Matin, with paddy sheaf symbol, received 7,505 votes. Awami League nominated mayoral candidate Shahina Begum, with boat symbol, received 5,160 votes. The total votes received at the suspended polling centre were 1,528. The difference in the number of votes received by the two competing mayoral candidates is less than the number of votes received at the suspended polling centre. Hence, the final result of the Bankshiganj municipality elections will be announced following a re-election at the suspended polling centre.
