Clash over harvesting paddy leaves 2 dead in Bagerhat
Two people have been killed and eight others injured in a clash between two rival groups over harvesting paddy from a crop field in Putikhali union under Morelganj upazila, Bagerhat. The deceased are Ibrahim Sheikh, 42, son of Torab Ali Sheikh from Patabaria village, and Polash Sheikh, 32, son of Shajahan Sheikh from Ambaria village. Both the deceased were motor workers. According to Putikhali Union Parishad Chairman Md Shah Chand Miah Shamim, there have been a longstanding dispute between two neighbours – Abdur Rahim Khan and Shahidul Khan – at Purbo Sonakhali village over a 0.16055846 hectare [one bigha] plot. Recently, Abdur Rahim cultivated paddy on that field. But as the relatives and followers of Abdur Rahim tried to obstruct the aggressors, a clash ensued. Both sides attacked each others with sharp weapons. At one point, Ibrahm and Polash, who are said to be the followers of Abdur Rahim Khan, received severe blows and died on the spot. The clash left eight villagers injured. They were admitted in Morelganj Upazila Health Complex and Khulna Medical College Hospital. Morelganj police station Officer-in-Charge Rashedul Islam said they have already recovered the two dead bodies and arrested six villagers from the village in connection with the incident. No case has yet been filed.
