20 Shibir activists detained in Chittagong

Update : 16 Dec 2017, 04:03 PM
Police have detained 20 leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student front of Jamaat-e-Islami, from Chittagong’s Laldighi Maidan. “They gathered there to carry out acts of sabotage at the Shaheed Minar,” Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge Md Jasim Uddin said on Sunday. Police raided the area around 8:30am after being tipped off about the Shibir activists’ gathering, reports UNB. Jasim said they were interrogating the Shibir activists. Shibir denied the allegation. “Our leaders and activists were detained when they were preparing to bring out a procession marking the Victory Day as part of our countrywide programme,” claimed Nurul Amin, a leader of the Jamaat student front’s Chittagong City (north) unit leader. He demanded the immediate release of the detainees. Jammat openly sided with Pakistan and joined hands with the occupation forces to thwart Bangladesh’s struggle for independence. Members of its the then student front Islami Chhatra Sangha, which was later renamed as Islami Chhatra Shibir, were part of the notorious auxiliary force al-Badr, which spearheaded the killing of intellectuals at the fag end of the war.
