Rajshahi health tech institute closed indefinitely after Chhatra League attack
Authorities on Wednesday shut down the Institute of Health Technology (IHT) in Rajshahi for an indefinite period, following an attack on its students allegedly by Chhatra League men that left five female students injured. The injured students are - Rupa, 19, and Naznin Aktar, 18, of the Pharmacy Department as well as Nadira, Mohona and Afrin Sharmin Jyoti, 18, of the Laboratory Department. Jyoti, Mohona, and Nadira have been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. All male students were asked to leave their dormitories by 1pm, while female students were given until 3pm, said IHT principal Dr Sirazul Islam. According to witnesses, the Chhatra League men swooped on a group of students when they went to the principal's room to lodge complaints for extortion and harassment by members of the student wing of ruling party. In the morning, some students submitted a memorandum to the principal demanding punishment of the institution's Chhatra League leaders who allegedly harassed students and extorted money from them. Chhatra League IHT unit’s president Jahidul Islam Jahid, however, denied that men under him were behind the attack. He dismissed the other allegations as well.

IHT Chhatra League committee dissolved

In a latest development, Rajshahi metropolitan unit Chhatra League dissolves the Institute of Health Technology (IHT) unit of the student body over the incident of launching an attack on the institution, according to an email from Fazle Rabbi, office secretary of Rajshahi metropolitan unit Chhatra League. The Rajshahi unit also advised the central president and general secretary to expel the IHT unit's President Jahidul Islam Jahid, Vice Presidents Mizan and Faisal, and General Secretary Anwar Hossain Tuhin, read the email.
