Obaidul Quader: Rohingya may be rehabilitated in Bhasan Char

Update : 04 Dec 2017, 04:09 PM
The displaced Rohingya refugees, who entered Bangladesh escaping persecution in Myanmar's Rakhine state, may be rehabilitated in Bhasan Char, said Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader. He made the remark at a fund and relief collection campaign in Cox’s Bazar on Monday. He said: “Currently the Rohingya refugees are living in a difficult condition in Cox’s Bazar. There is an excessive pressure on the city’s economy, environment, tourism and nature. If we are not able to send the refugees back to Myanmar soon, we will rehabilitate them in Noakhali’s Bhasan Char.” “The countries who are concerned about the Rohingyas can also rehabilitate them in their own land,” the minister added. He said Bangladesh had to already deal with massive damages of flood this year, and now the Rohingya crisis has put extra pressure on the government. The government is now planning an alternative way to rehabilitate the Rohingyas, he added. “Bangladesh Army will start building a cross-border road in the Bangladesh-Myanmar border soon. Besides, the countries will form a joint working group which will start their operation to rehabilitate Rohingyas.” Several Awami League MPs and local lawmakers have donated money and relief in the campaign.
