A rickshaw puller has allegedly been beaten to death in Ashulia for failing to pay a due of Tk700.
Shahjahan Mia, the victim, lived there with his wife Rita Akhter, 14-year-old daughter Sonia Akhter and seven-year-old son Rafi.
Rita said her husband had taken a loan of Tk30,000 to buy a rickshaw from a local cooperative owned by one Shahidul.
“He (Shahjahan) had paid back Tk29,300. They beat my husband to death on Saturday for the remaining Tk700," she said. "We could not save him.”
Sonia said her father went to meet garage owner Nowshed and Shahidul after they called up over the phone on Saturday night.
“I received a call from my father after a while. He was crying for help. He said, 'save me, they will kill me'.”
“We found him lying on the ground when we rushed to the spot,” she said. Shahjahan was taken to a local hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
Bokul Hossai, the victim's brother, said Shahajahan was the sole wage earner of the family.
Locals said Nowshed and Shahidul had gone into hiding soon after the incident.
Meanwhile, their garage and cooperative office were found closed.
Ashulia police station Sub-Inspector Shafiqul Islam said a case had been filed over the matter.
"We are trying to arrest the killers," he said, adding that the body had been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
