RU proctor assaulted during eviction drive on campus
Rajshahi University’s proctor has been allegedly assaulted while ousting part of a snack shop which was illegally set up on the campus. The incident took place at the University Paribahan (Transportation) Market around noon on Wednesday. Police have detained the owner of “Campus Food Corner” Nizam Uddin and his brother Mohon Uddin Munna in this connection. According to campus sources, Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman, along with some assistant proctors and the director of the university’s estate department Md Zahid Ali, started an eviction drive on the campus on Wednesday morning. The two brothers – Nizam and Mohon – got engaged in a brawl with the proctorial team when the latter gave an instruction to remove the extended part of their store where a sitting arrangement was set up occupying extra space. At one point of the scuffle, Nizam started using abusive language towards the teachers and pushed down Assistant Proctor Md Habibur Rahman. Following Nizam’s action, some agitated university students, who were present at the scene, badly beat up the duo and vandalised their shop. Later, Motihar police detained the duo from the spot and took them to the police station. Previously, the university authorities had sealed the store for several times on charge of various offences; but the owner somehow managed to reopen it with the assistance of local political leaders. Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune that the store was occupying more space than allotted which has been hindering the smooth movement of the students. “The shop owner Nizam is allegedly involved with criminal activities and accused of selling expired food,” the proctor said. Motihar police station acting OC Mehedi Hasan said legal action will be taken against Nizam and Mohon after discussing with the university administration.
