Fourth college student commits suicide in six weeks

In less than three weeks, three college girls have committed suicide. The latest casualty of this spree of deaths is Anita, a 17-year-old student of Barisal Government College. On Saturday, Anita went to visit her friend Shreya at her home. She called Shreya, who could not answer because she was in the shower. After Shreya stepped out of the shower, she saw the calls and a text message from Anita. She was alarmed by the contents and ran to the roof, where she found Anita’s phone, dropped on the roof before Anita leapt to her death. Locals found Anita with grievous injuries and took her to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where she passed around 5:30pm, according to a staff doctor who operated on her.

Kotwali police Sub-Inspector Satya Ranjan told the Dhaka Tribune the police is investigating whether it is a suicide or if she was pushed off the ledge. On November 14, Arghya Biswas committed suicide after he was restricted by Gopalganj Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University authorities from taking part in exams. On October 27, Bonya Roy was compelled to take her life after a local Chhatra League leader made her life miserable with regular harassment. On October 9, 12-year-old Chandni killed herself after a group of locals who regularly harassed her entered her house and tried to abduct her and beat up her father.
