Police have arrested 28 members of a notorious robber gang from a bus after a gunfight in Ashulia.
Three passengers were also rescued from the vehicle during the police operation Thursday night at Nabinagar bus terminal area.
Two senior police officers of Ashulia police station were injured in the skirmish.
Police said they put up a check post on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway after being tipped off that 28 members of a robber gang were coming to Dhaka from Manikganj.
The robbers opened fire at the check post and a skirmish ensued.
Ashulia police’s Officer-in-Charge Abdul Awal and OC (operations) Zahidul Islam were injured after being hit by broken glasses from the bus windows.
Later, police surrounded the bus and forced the robbers to surrender.
Savar circle’s Additional Superintendent of Police Khorshed Alam said the gang roamed the country in disguise.
They picked up passengers, took away valuables and dumped the victims on the road with their hands and legs tied.
Khorshed said they had been tipped off that the gang was preparing for robbery. Many of these robbers were accused in a number of cases.
Police named the robbers as Bashir Molla, Swapan Molla, Al-Amin, Mehedi Hasan, Habibur Rahman, Wahiduzzaman, Sanaullah Bepari, Shafiqul Islam, Kashem Muksed, Zahidul Islam, Enamul, Shah Alam, Ruhul Amin, Bashir, Abu Sayeed, Mamun, Rahid, Kaisar, Mohsin, Alamin, Kamrul, Iqbal, Forhad, Rafiqul, Babul, Baharul Islam, Zakir and Supon.
A pistol, two magazines, five rounds of bullet and other locally-made weapons were recovered from them.
