Two policemen have faced public wrath after beating up a soldier of the Bangladesh Army over a trivial matter at Charghat upazila in Rajshahi.
The incident occurred in Baladiyar Village under Nimpara union on Friday evening.
Nimpara Union Parishad Member Abdus Samad told the Dhaka Tribune that Yasin Arafat, a private (Sainik) in the army, recently came to Baladiyar to visit his in-laws. He had borrowed a motorcycle from a family member, to learn how to ride it.
“While Yasin was practicing on a road, Charghat Model police station ASI Shaheen and a constable asked him to stop. But he could not stop on time as he was not yet very adept at riding the motorcycle.
"Agitated by that, the two policemen beat up Yasin with rifle butts, causing a head injury," Samad added.
Locals, enraged by their action, then assaulted the policemen and vandalised their motorcycle, forcing them to take shelter in a nearby home.
Later, Charghat police Officer-in-Charge Nibaran Chandra Barman arrived at the scene and rescued the two after calming the angry mob.
He told the Dhaka Tribune that the two policemen had a misunderstanding with the locals, but he managed to resolve it.
