Two suspected militant recruiters of a new faction of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (New JMB) have been arrested from Sabujbagh and Wari areas in Dhaka.
Two Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) teams arrested the militants of the Sarwar-Tamim group on Wednesday during raids, said RAB 11 Operation Officer Additional SP Shakil Ahmed.
Both arrestees – Md Gias Uddin, 34, and Md Liton, 34 – are accused in two cases filed with the Rupganj and Bandar police stations in Narayanganj.
Additional SP Shakil said Gias was a rickshaw-puller before becoming a cook in 2000. In 2012, he was hired to cook by banned outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team’s (ABT) spiritual leader Jasim Uddin Rahmania.
While working for ABT, Gias was radicalised by Jasim’s sermons. Gias went into hiding after Jasim was arrested. In Sabujbagh, Gias began to fraternising with one Imam Sheikh Arif Hossain at Quran Sunnat Academy Mosque.
Arif had invited him to join New JMB’s Sarwar-Tamim group. Soon, he soon became one of the recruiters.
RAB 11 official Shakil Ahmed also said that Liton, who came to Dhaka in 2005, used to work as a security guard and a construction worker before he was radicalised.
In 2012, Liton started going to the Jasim Uddin Rahmania’s mosque where he met a man called Montasir who invited him to join the Sarwar-Tamim group. He too became a recruiter for them soon.
