The Department of Shipping has undertaken a project to conduct a maritime census in Bangladesh.
The project is named “National Ships and Mechanised Boat Database Management and Capacity Building.”
The project was announced on Wednesday at a meeting held at the Shipping Ministry auditorium, on the development, finance and administrative activities of the Department of Shipping, said an official handout.
Presided over by Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan, the meeting was addressed by Secretary of the ministry Md Abdus Samad and Director General of the Department of Shipping Commodore Syed Ariful Islam, among others.
At the meeting, it was also suggested to create awareness among ship owners for the addition of reversible gears to ships and boats, to better control speed and reduce the incidence of accidents. Reversible gears had so far been installed on 218 ships, the release added.
