Five held after woman raped in Satkhira
Police arrested five people on the charge of raping a woman in Satkhira on Sunday. The rape allegedly occurred at a brick field in Chhaigharia village of the sadar upazila. The arrested men are Tariqul Islam, 25, Idris Ali, 20, Alamin, 22, Kabirul Islam, 27, and Sanjay, 25, hailing from different villages in the upazila. The victim, a widow, goes from village to village to sell different essential products. According to police, Tariqul bought products from the woman and owed her Tk1,000. On Sunday evening, he phoned and asked her to come near Kadamtala Bridge to receive her dues. When she arrived there, he again called to ask her to go to Siraj brick field. She followed the instruction, but when she reached the spot, Tariqul and four other men allegedly raped her. On hearing her screams, police rushed to the spot and rescued her at 10pm on the day. Police arrested Kabirul from the spot and then raided different places of the upazila to arrest the others. A case has been filed, accusing 10 people in the incident. Satkhira police station Officer-in-Charge Maruf Ahmed said Idris Ali, one of the arrested men, has already confessed under Section 164. The OC said police have continued the operation to arrest the rest of the accused.
