A demonstration has been held in Jessore town protesting against the persecution of the Rohingya minority in Myanmar.
Several thousand people joined the rally at Doratana area of the town on Saturday morning. The event was organised by Jessore District Imam Parishad, an organisation of imams.
Addressing the rally, the Parishad's leaders observed that torture, rape and mass killing of Rohingyas were part of Myanmar's plan to force them out of the country.
They praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government for giving refuge to the fleeing Rohingyas, and demanded intensifying diplomatic moves to repatriate the refugees to their homeland.
The demonstrators also brought out a procession and paraded key streets of the town, chanting slogans to stop the oppression and killing of Rohingyas.
