Arrested Jubo Dal leader killed in ‘gunfight’
A local leader of the Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, the youth front of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), arrested by law enforcers on Tuesday, was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Krishnarampur area of Begumganj upazila of Noakhali on Wednesday night. The deceased is M Alam, 32, son of Abul Bashar of Bhippur village of the upazila. The victim was the senior convener of Alaiyarpur union unit Jubo Dal in Begumganj upazila, said Md Manik, Jubo Dal secretary of the union. Officer-in-Charge of Begumganj police station Sajedur Rahman said Alam was sued in 10 cases. Police arrested Alam from his home at night and took him on the weapons raid in Amanullahpur union’s East Jainarayanpur village. Alam’s accomplices opened fire on the police team in a bid to snatch him, the OC said. Police returned fire. At one point Alam fled. He was rescued from the scene of the gunfight in critical condition. Later, he was sent to Noakhali General Hospital where on duty doctors declared him dead. A pistol, a pipe gun and various other materials used in a robbery were recovered from the scene, said police. However, family members claimed he was picked up from his home early on Tuesday and later killed in a crossfire.
