Three people were killed and two others injured after a container laden lorry fell onto a CNG autorickshaw on a battered road in Chittagong city’s Nimtala area Sunday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Wajed Ali, 60, Jasim Sikdar, 38, and Mossarraf Hosssen Musa 42, police sources said.
The injured – Sujon, 26, and Saidul, 28 – are undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), CMCH Police Outpost Inspector Jahirul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune.
Bandar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Moinul Islam said: "A port-bound container laden lorry plunged into a deep pothole on the Port Connecting Road in Nimtala area and fell on a CNG-run auto rickshaw carrying five people, at around 10:30am."
"Two died on the spot, while firefighters pulled victims out from the crushed CNG with the help of two cranes," added the OC.
Chittagong Fire Service and Civil Defense Headquarters Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) Jasim Uddin said: "Due to the battered condition of the road, the lorry turned and fell on the CNG before firefighters rescued the injured and sent them to the hospital."
The 6.1km-long Port Connecting Road, which directly links the Chittagong port and Dhaka-Chittagong highway, contributes a lot to Bangladesh's economy, and has been in dilapidated condition since October 2016 with accidents reportedly occurring because of numerous big and small potholes and cracks.
