A Shaheed Minar on the premises of a century-old school in Gopalganj has been vandalised by two youths.
Footage of the recent incident, making rounds on social media, has triggered an outpouring of anger among the locals who demand punishment for the crime.
Two boys, who appear to be in their teens, are seen kicking the Shaheed Minar on Kotalipara Union Institution premises. They eventually succeed in breaking a part of the structure.
One of the boys is seen holding the broken part and hoisting it like a trophy before slamming it into the ground.
Police say they have identified the perpetrators.
Headmaster Himangshu Kumar Pandey said they had informed police and the local administration.
Earlier this week, the school's Assistant Headmaster Motiar Hossain was assaulted and the headmaster's room was vandalised after a grade VIII student was suspended for a week.
A case was filed with Kotalipara police. One of the accused is currently in police custody.
Kotalipara police's Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Kamrul Faruk said the assault and vandalism took place on Sunday.
“We assume that the Shaheed Minar was desecrated on the same day. We have identified the culprits from the video,” he said, adding that a case would be filed soon.
OC Faruk declined to share details saying the two would be arrested anytime.
