Indian medical student killed in Chittagong
An Indian student of a private medical university was stabbed to death allegedly by his Indian classmate, while the alleged killer also tried to commit suicide by hanging in Chittagong city’s Akbarshah area on early Saturday. The deceased was identified as Ateef Sheikh, 25, son of Abdul Sheikh, hailing from Monipur state in northeastern India, Akbarshah police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Jashimuddin told the Dhaka Tribune. “He was a final year student of the MBBS course under University of Science and Technology Chittagong (USTC), in the 25th batch,” said the SI. SI Jashimuddin added that the alleged murderer, Ateef’s roommate and fellow medical student Maisnam Winson Singh, 25, tried to commit suicide after the incident and was admitted to the ICU of a private hospital in critical condition. The motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained. The incident took place at a flat on the fourth floor of the six-storey Haji Yusuf Vila, on Abdul Hamid Road of the Foys Lake area between 11:30pm and 12am, said police sources. Quoting the building caretaker and neighbors, SI Jashimuddin said: “Ateef and Winson used to reside in the flat with two other Indian students—Gangmal Niraj and one Joyotsana Debi- who are also medical students of USTC.” “Last night there was an in-house party at the apartment, where a few friends attended and left at around 11pm. After the party, the duo drank liquor inside their room after closing the door,” said the SI, adding that Niraj later entered the room after failing to get a response from the two, and found Ateef in pool of blood and Winson hanging from the ceiling at around 12:30am. The duo was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where the on-duty doctors declared Ateef dead, said the SI. According to the SI, Ateef’s throat was slit and the body had at least 15 injury marks, and Winson tried to hang himself after the incident but failed as he was rescued by the other two Indians. Akbarshah police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Alamgir Hossen told the Dhaka Tribune that the reason behind the incident was yet to be ascertained as Winson is still undergoing treatment. “We interrogated Niraj and Joyotsona, who said the duo used to exchange heated words after drinking,” he said, adding that 27th batch medical student Joyotsona was in a relationship with Ateef. OC Alamgir further said Ateef’s body was handed over to USTC authorities and Niraj and Joyotsna were also released to the custody of the university after interrogation.
