Authorities given 24 hours ultimatum to arrest RU journo assaulters
Rajshahi-based journalists have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the authorities to arrest the Chhatra League leaders in a case filed over assaulting The Daily Star correspondent at the Rajshahi University. They made the announcement at a human chain formed in front of the university’s central library at 12pm on Tuesday. A group of RU Chhatra League leaders including RU Chhatra League Vice-President Ahmed Sajib, Organising Secretary Abid Hasan Labon and Law Secretary Saiful Islam Bijoy and Research and Information Secretary Kanon assaulted Arafat for taking photos while they were vandalising a bus of Desh Travels on Monday. A case was filed against the four Chhatra League leaders mentioned above along with some 8-10 unnamed people in this connection with city’s Motihar police station.

The speakers also demanded suspension of the accused students from the university. The one-hour-long human chain was attended by the journalists from different print and electronic media houses along with the campus reporters in RU. Workers’ Party general Secretary Fazle Hossain Badshah, Rajshahi University Central Cultural Alliance, Rajshahi University Students Federation and Jhenaidah District Committee expressed solidarity with the demand. Arafat, who is also a second-year student of mass communication and journalism in the university, was initially rushed to the university’s medical centre and later he was transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for better treatment. He was released from the hospital on Tuesday afternoon.
