At least 30 baby cobras were killed and 45 eggs were destroyed at Durgapur upazila in Rajshahi when a mother snake was rescued on Monday.
According to the locals, Rabiul Islam, a local farmer, first noticed a mammoth cobra at his residence. He started screaming and called his neighbours after noticing the snake could manage to hide in a hole.
When Rabiul and his neighbours started digging up the hole, a total of 30 baby cobras came out one after another, which they killed on the spot by beating with sticks.
They also recovered 45 eggs from the hole and destroyed them.
Mohamin Islam, a local leader of Maria union, told the Dhaka Tribune: "I have never seen so many cobras together in my life. It is creating panic among the city dwellers. I urge everyone to be careful."
Furthermore, 27 more cobras were found in Budhpara area of the district on Tuesday. Those snakes were also beaten to death.
