Benapole transport strike called off
Transport workers have called off the indefinite strike in Benapole following a meeting with Chhatra League leaders and activists. The strike was enforced on Saturday morning protesting an attack by Chhatra League activists on three staff of Green Line Paribahan. Greenline Paribahan Manager Robin said the strike was withdrawn after the Chhatra League leaders offered apology admitting their fault. Earlier in the morning, transport workers staged demonstrations by putting barricade on the main road of Benapole halting the transport movement. Benapole Port police station Officer-in-Charge Apurbo Hasan said: “It is an unfortunate incident. Necessary action would be taken if the workers file any complain.” Greenline Paribahan Manager Robin said Chhatra League leaders and activists made an unprovoked attack on three of our staff and vandalised the bus counter while they were moving with a procession on Thursday. On the other hand, Akul Hossain, general secretary of Sharsha upazila Chhatra League unit said the Chhatra League leaders and activists were crossing Benapole bazar area with a procession. Meanwhile, a Greenline bus was loading goods on the highway creating difficulties to people’s movement. He said: “When the Chhatra League men were talking to Greenline workers about the problem, one of the workers misbehaved with an activist. Then they locked in an altercation which ended up in a scuffle.”
