Lightning strikes five, including a minor, dead in Kushtia
A brief shower in Kushtia saw a series of lethal thunderbolts which left five dead and further injured four. The dead are- Sattar Ali, 50, Shahin Ali, 42, Abul Kashem, 42, Ashik Ali, 11, Musharaf Hossain, 50. On Sunday afternoon around 1pm, about 10-12 farmers were working on their lands in the village of Moshatola in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia.

There was a light shower, punctuated by stark lightning. Mirpur police reached the location quickly after they were informed. Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mirpur police station, said three of the deceased had been taken away by their families. Regarding the injured, the OC said they had been sent to the local hospital. Reports of casualties in lightning strikes have become more and more frequent in 2017. On May 9, 16 people from all over Bangladesh died when they were struck by lightning.

Till May 18, there have been 62 confirmed deaths by lightning strikes. In 2016, a total of 216 people died in lightning strikes.
