Chittagong abuzz with Eid shoppers
With Eid-ul-Fitr just around the corner, no amount of traffic congestion, rains and unbearable summer heat has been able to deter the determined shoppers in Chittagong. People from all walks of life are busy buying last minute gifts and looking for the best Eid deals everywhere from upscale malls to street vendors. Shopkeepers said sales are finally picking up in the last few days before Eid. Extra law enforcement personnel including Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has already been deployed in strategic parts of the city to ensure security for everyone. Expressing satisfaction over the law and order situation, Zakir Hossain, general secretary of Central Plaza Shopping Complex Merchants’ Association told the Dhaka Tribune: “We are pleased with the level of security being provided. Everyone feels safe shopping here and that is very important.” Well-off shoppers were seen thronging Sanmar Ocean City, Afmi Plaza, Mimi Super Market, New Market, Ameen Centre, Akhtaruzzaman Centre, Younosco Centre, Central Plaza, Lucky Plaza, Chittagong Shopping Complex, Bay Shopping, VIP Shopping, Guljar Tower and Mati Tower. Middle income group of people are doing their Eid shopping from Terry Bazar, Reaz Uddin Bazar and Jahur Hawkers Market. Lower income group of people are crowding makeshift shops at New Market, Bahadderhat, GEC, CEPZ, Number 2 Gate Market and Reaz Uddin Bazar. Local boutique saris are in higher demand this time instead of Indian saris. The local Bangladeshi saris which are selling well include Sopura Silk, different types of georgettes, Jute Katan, Opera Katan, Rajshahi Silk, Jamdani etc. Young men are gathering at popular outlets like Shailpik, Anjan's, Sadakalo, Handibazar, Khaki, Miabibi, Bangaliana, Khadighar and Paristhan for attractive and colourful punjabis. Apart from posh shopping malls, the street vendors said that they were also making a profit as the number of shoppers were increasing with Eid approaching soon. Sari, 3 Piece, shirt, pants, panjabi, payjama, shoe are available at a lower price at the makeshift shops. Some products have become parts of last moment Eid shopping such as jewelry, home decor, attar, caps, prayer mats and rosary beads.
