Political killings on the rise in Khulna
Khulna hardly saw a murder taking place in each of the first four months of the year. But, the scenario of the district’s law and order situation started changing drastically since late May. At least eight killings including a double murder were reported in a span of 26 days starting from May 25. Interestingly, five of them had political affiliation. Police said one of the dead was an Awami League leader, two were leaders of BNP and one was connected with Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) and Islami Shashontantra Andolan each. The latest assassination took place on June 20 when a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader was hacked to death in the Khulna city’s Daulatpur area. The victim, Abdullah Al Faisal alias Shiblu Molla, was a member of the student front’s Khulna Brajalal College unit. Prior to that, a freedom fighter identified as Shahadat Molla was gunned down on June 14. Shiblu’s father  Md Faruquzzaman Babu Molla said some local youths named Hasan and Biplob, two ruling party leaders who are very influential Daulatpur, murdered his son. Daulatpur police station’s Officer-in-Charge they are investigating into the murders of Shiblu and IAB leader Iqbal Hossain. “We are also trying to arrest all the people linked to the murders,” he said. Two suspected killers have so far been arrested over Shiblu’s murder though. Meanwhile, BNP’s Khunla district unit president Nazrul Islam, quoting witnesses, also accused Hasan and Biplob of murdering Shiblu. “Despite having evidence against the two, the police are showing negligence in arresting them,” he alleged. Daulatpur Thana unit Awami League President Sheikh Syed Ali denied the allegation of his fellow leaders and activists being linked to the murder, saying they never support any crime. “If any ruling party man is found guilty though a trial, he must face the music,” he warned. In the night of May 25, BNP’s Khulna district unit organising secretary Sardar Alauddin Mithu was also shot dead along with one of his bodyguards, Nowsher Gazi, at his office in Phultola upazila. Another bodyguard and Mithu’s father-in-law was also shot and injured in the attack. Police detained a suspect over the incident. The double murder was followed by the rest political killings. On June 2, Islami Shashontantra Andolan leader Iqbal Sarwar was gunned down in Daulatpur area as well. Other than the political murders, police found the bullet-hit body of an unidentified man on May 31 in Khulna city, while a 64-year-old man named Sheikh Mostaq Ali was killed reportedly over a family feud the next day. Another body was found in Rupsha upazila the same day. According to police, most of the political killings were resulted from rivalry over establishing supremacy in respective areas. When contacted, Khulna Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Manira Sultana said they have already unearthed the motives behind the killings that took place in the city in the last couple of weeks.
