Lightning strikes claim 14 lives nationwide in one day


A woman, her son, and several farmers are among the deceased in Faridpur, where five others were killed by lightning the previous day. Helena Begum, 35, and her 10-year-old son lost their lives at Bhabukdia village under Saltha upazila of the district around 12:30pm. The duo were inside their kitchen, sources said. Farmer Milon Khan, 40, from the same village was killed while returning home from his crop field around the same time, police said. Furthermore, a labourer named Kajal Biswas and another farmer named Omar Faruq, both aged between 35 and 45, were killed in the morning in the district's Char Bhadrasan and Sadar upazilas respectively. In Boalmari upazila, an imam Auwal Fakir, 40, and a devotee Faruq Molla, 35, died in a lightning strike.


Our Manikganj correspondent reported that two minor boys were killed by lightning strikes in Shibalaya upazila. Local Union Parishad Chairman Jammat Ali said lightning struck Ruhul Sheikh when he was returning home picking up some fruits from a nearby garden. He died on the spot. Six-year-old Alam's death was reported around 11am, when he too was picking fruits at an orchard near his house.


In Magura, two farmers were killed in different thunderbolt incidents in the Sadar upazila of the district. The deceased are Kalam Biswas, 48, of Naliadangi village and Asad Sheikh, 50, of Moghi village of the upazila. Lightning struck Kalam while he was working at his vegetable field, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Asad died in the afternoon while he was working at a crop field in his village. Later Asad was sent to the Sadar hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.


A teenage boy, Badsha, was killed in a lightning strike at Doulatpur upazila of Kushtia while cutting grass in a field close to his house around 11am. The deceased, 17, was the son of Abdur Razzaque of Thakurpara village.


A man named Azad, 40, was killed by a lightning strike at Munshir Taluk village under Sadar upazila of the district, said our Noakhali correspondent. Police said the victim was working at his poultry farm around 7:45am adjacent to his home when a thunderbolt struck him, causing his death on the spot.


In Joypurhat, a woman identified as Ratna Begum was killed in Panchbibi upazila of the district as lightning struck her in the morning.
