Hefazat demands a public apology from Sultana Kamal

Update : 05 Jun 2017, 02:07 AM
Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh on Friday threatened to declare Sultana Kamal a persona non grata in Chittagong if she did not apologise for the comments she made on talk show. Mainuddin Ruhi, joint secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam made the threat while addressing at an iftar gathering on Friday saying: “She must apologise before the nation. Otherwise we will not let her come to Chittagong.” Speaking at the iftar party, organised by Hefazat at a madrasa, the leader of the radical Islamist platform said: “Sultana Kamal commented that the mosques have to be removed first from the country before the removal of the statues. The true face of Sultana Kamal was exposed to the nation over her recent demeaning remarks.” However, at the talk show in question, in response to Hefazat leader Mufti Shakawat Hossain’s statement that no religious structures should be on the Supreme Court premises, in reference to the statue representing impartial justice, Sultana Kamal replied: “Then no mosques should be on the premises either.” “We must find out the source of her arrogance. Dhaka is a city of mosques while Kolkata is a city of statues. If she does not like it here then she can easily go to Kolkata where her predecessor Taslima Nasrin lives,” added Ruhi. Calling the eminent rights activist an immoral woman he also questioned her character, called her an atheist and an ally of Hindutva, the Hefazat leader said that the younger generation and the children of freedom fighters would not forgive Sultana Kamal if she did not apologise for her comment. Earlier, the leaders of the Qawmi madrasa-based organisation also said they would break every bone in her body and urged the government to arrest Sultana Kamal for what they said was “derogatory comments about mosques.”
