Members of the Hindu community from nearby districts gathered at Gangashram Ghat on the Pagla riverbank in Kansat upazila of Chapainawabganj district to have a holy bath on Sunday.
Around 3,500-4,000 people from Rajshahi, Natore, Naogaon, Bogra and Dinajpur thronged the area and plunged into the river water with the sunrise, believing the ritual would wash away their sins.
The area was also abuzz with the chanting of verses from Hindu scriptures and performances of holy songs. The devotees joined a religious congregation after the holy bath.
The ritual, called “Jahnumunir Dussehra Gangasnan” is performed on the 10th day of the Suklapakkha [bright phase of the moon] in the Bangali month of Jaishtha.
It is believed that the goddess Ganga descended to earth from heaven on the day. At one point in her journey, the river goddess was devoured by the sage Jahnu, only to be released through his ear afterward.
