A man was killed and 20 others seriously injured in a clash between two groups over taking lease of a local mosque land in Nabiganj of Habiganj Saturday.
The deceased, Sabur Mia, 25, was the son of Takdir Ali who hails from the upazila’s Kanaipur village.
Officer-in-Charge of Nabiganj police station SM Ataur Rahman confirmed the incident to the Dhaka Tribune.
According to police, the mosque land had long been a matter of dispute between Abdul Barik and former Union Parishad member Faraz Ali of the area.
Supporters of the two groups engaged in a clash with locally-made weapons around noon that left 21 people severely injured.
All of the injured were rushed to the Upazila Health Complex in critical condition. Of them, Sabur Mia died while receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, many involved in the clash fled the village soon after to avoid arrest.
The OC said: “Police recovered Sabur’s body and sent it to Habiganj Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
“We have detained Ruman Miah over the incident. Additional police forces have been deployed to avoid further clashes.”
