At least five students of Barisal University were injured in sporadic clashes between two groups of Chhatra League, the ruling party’s student wing, over organising an iftar party Friday night.
Three of the injured were admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. They are Al Amin of political science department, Enamul of chemistry and Sakib of marketing.
Teachers brought the situation under control after two factions of Chhatra League clashed for over an hour since 11pm. They again clashed inside the dormitory and vandalised several rooms.
Police outpost In-Charge Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman said that they were not allowed to enter the campus during the clashes. “Additional police have been deployed to thwart further clashes,” he added.
No case has been filed over the incident.
The clash ensued as a Chhatra League faction led by Imran Hossain Nayeem organised an iftar party at Habib Hotel and Restaurant on Friday.
The other faction, led by Shawon and Rujbel, had boycotted the restaurant several days ago following clashes with the locals. Their supporters took position in front of the campus along with sticks, rods and other sharp weapons to foil the iftar party.
Imran group supporters, armed with local weapons, engaged in clashes with their rivals being obstructed.
When contacted, Imran said that some of his followers had been tortured by the rival group following a brawl over the iftar party.
Shawon claimed one of his supporters had been beaten up severely inside the dormitory.
