A man has been arrested for burying his wife alive for dowry in Bogra's Shibganj upazila.
Fortunately, NGO workers rescued the victim with the help of locals on Tuesday.
The man, 25-year-old Saddam Hossain, claimed he was only trying to scare his wife Sarjina Khatun, 22.
Residents of Krishnapur Dhawakandi village however had a different tale to tell when they said Saddam regularly beat up his wife. The night before the incident, he assaulted Sarjina and set her hair on fire.
Saddam and his mother have been accused in a case filed by Sarjina's father over the incident. The latter is absconding. A Bogra court sent Saddam to jail on Wednesday.
Sarjina is being treated at Shibganj Upazila Health Complex.
Dowry is a common practice in rural areas of Bangladesh, where most dowry-related violence often go unreported.
According to Ain o Salish Kendra
, 126 women were killed in dowry-related violence last year. Four victims killed themselves while 108 others were physically abused. Ninety-five cases were filed over the incidents.
Locals said Saddam had been torturing Sarjina for dowry since their marriage four years ago. On Tuesday morning, the couple had an argument when Saddam started beating his wife and tried to stab her.
Sarjina fled to a neighbour's house but Saddam dragged her back to the house and buried her in a hole dug in their bedroom.
An NGO worker present at the neighbour's house informed her superior after which they went to the couple's house with other villagers.
What they saw from the window was straight out of a horror movie: Saddam was burying Sarjina alive and only her face was showing.
They then broke into the house, rescued Sarjina and apprehended Saddam.
Shibganj police Sub-Inspector Abul Kalam Azad took the victim to a hospital and arrested the husband. “The woman was buried alive,” he said. “We could not record her statement as she is sick.”
In February, a teenage bride was tortured to death by her in-laws for dowry in Faridpur. In March, a man from Gopalganj was arrested for murdering his wife for the same. Earlier this month, a Lakshmipur court sentenced to a man to death for killing his wife for dowry in 2012.
