Adivasi couple tortured, house vandalised in Hili

A man and his mother have been arrested for beating up an Adivasi (indigenous) couple and vandalising their house in Dinajpur's Hili over land dispute, police say. Azizul Haque, 45, a locally known drug peddler, assaulted Deben Hasda, 50, and his wife Putul Maddi, 45, at Madhya Basudebpur village on Wednesday. They also vandalised the couple's house and cut off several trees on the yard. Deben's left hand and right leg were injured while his wife's hands and legs had swollen, Hakimpur police's Officer-in-Charge Md Abdus Sabur said, adding that they had learned about the incident on Friday. “We visited the spot and found the allegation about the assault to be true and arrested Azizul and his mother Rehana Bewa,” he said. “We have learned that Azizul attacked the couple over a land dispute.” Azizul and his mother would be shown arrested in a case filed over the incident, the officer added.
