Lightning strikes kill eight in two districts
At least eight people were killed in lightning strikes in Naogaon and Khagrachhari districts on Saturday. Our Naogaon correspondent reported that five people including two students were killed in separate incidents of thunderbolt in the afternoon. Rafiqul Islam, of Sorijpur village, and Amzad Hossen, of Fatepur village of Sadar upazila, both primary school students, were killed by lightning while collecting mangoes. On the other hand, farmers Ratan, Aftab and Arafat were killed while harvesting paddy in the field at Dorshona village under Atrai upazila. Mohammad Abdul Haque, superintendent of police, confirmed the deaths. In Khagrachhari, three people were killed in lightning strikes in the town in the afternoon, our correspondent reported. The victims are Neomrasong Marma, 45, and her son Thoaipru Marma, 20, in Bhaibonchhara area, and Sanu Marma in Battala area. Parimal Tripura, chairman of Bhaibon Chhara Union Parishad, said that they mother and the son were struck by lightning while having lunch.
