The director general (DG) of the National Academy for Primary Education (NAPE) was killed and five others were injured in a road accident in Chittagong yesterday.
The accident took place in Fatikchhari upazila on Saturday morning.
Md Fazlur Rahman, 55, a resident of Mymensingh, joined NAPE as the director general on January 19, 2015 according to NAPE sources.
The injured - Chittagong Primary Teachers Training Institute (PTTI) Superintendent Rafiqul Islam, Patiya upazila PTTI Superintendent Musfeka Binte Sultan, employee Saiful Islam and driver Ali Hossen - were admitted to Chittagong Medical College (CMCH), said CMCH police outpost Inspector Jahirul Islam.
Fatikchhari police Sub-Inspector (SI) Irfan Uddin Rajib told the Dhaka Tribune: “The accident took place on Chittagong-Khagrachhari Highway in Baraiarhat around 7:30am.”
“A truck collided head-on with the microbus carrying the education officials in front of Ananda Cinema Hall. The people onboard were critically injured and rescued by locals who took them to CMCH,” SI Irfan said.
SI Rajib said the truck driver fled the spot with the vehicle and that police were trying to track him down.
CMCH Inspector Jahir said: “The injured were admitted to CMCH around 9:15am where the on-duty doctors declared DG Fazlur dead upon examination.”
Md Abdul Hye, senior specialist at NAPE told the Dhaka Tribune: “DG Fazlur was going to Khagrachhari along with other education officers to inaugurate a diploma training programme for primary education teachers.”
“He lived in Malibagh in Dhaka. He has a son who is an assistant superintendent of police with RAB”, said the NAPE official.
DG Fazlur’s body was flown to Dhaka after the autopsy.
