Adivasi students demand end to murders in CHT

Students belonging to indigenous communities demonstrated in Khagrachhari town Sunday demanding justice for the killings of Romel Chakma, Sadikul Islam and Eti Chakma. They brought out a procession under the banner of Socialist Students’ Front (SSF) in the afternoon, and held a rally. Starting from Shapla Chhattar, the procession paraded important streets of the town before ending at Muktomoncho. SSF Khagrachhari unit President Kabir Hossain and its General Secretary Arindam Krishna Dey, among others, addressed the rally. Apart from demanding fair trial in the killings of the three youths, the student leaders urged the government to stop persecution across the country carried out law enforcement agencies. Romel, general secretary of Naniarchar upazila unit Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP), was picked up by some army personnel on April 5. He died while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital on April 19. The body of Sadikul Islam, a 20-year-old for-hire motorcycle driver from Khagrachhari, was recovered from Naniarchar area of Rangamati on April 13, three days after he was abducted. Bangali groups have blamed United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) for the murder. On the other hand, the throat-slit body of Eti Chakma, 18, a second-year student of Khagrachhari Government College, was found at her house in Arambagh area in the town on February 27.
