The Border Security Force (BSF) of India apologised to its Bangladeshi counterpart on Saturday, a day after its members beat up a couple inside Bangladesh territory in the Borokhata area of Lalmonirhat.
The BSF officials made the apology during a company commander-level flag meeting with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in the morning.
15 BGB Battalion officials, quoting locals, said that the couple – Shahidul Islam and his wife Amena Begum, who hail from the same area – along with some others were cutting grass along the border on Friday afternoon.

Without warning, an Indian patrol team from camp 34 under Cooch Behar district trespassed on to Bangladesh territory and attacked them. The duo were detained and beaten up, as others fled the scene.
BGB Director of the unit Lt Col Golam Morshed confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune and added that the Indian border security officials had accused the couple of smuggling.
Torture and deaths due to gunfire by Border Security Force members along the Bangladesh border has long been a matter of concern among rights activists. However, BSF insists that they act only in defence.
